چکیده
patients presented with dyspepsia compared with 13 (65%) of the 20 patients in the same age group who had not taken the drugs (p<0-001, x2 test). The patients who had taken the drugs therefore constituted 81% (30/37) of those without dyspepsia. In the group aged 65-74 who had taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs the numbers with and without dyspepsia were similar. Overall, most of the patients who had taken the drugs presented with either bleeding or iron deficiency anaemia.

Modulation of the Immune Response to Respiratory Viruses by Vitamin D
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to be independently associated with increased risk of viral acute respiratory infection (ARI) in a number of observational studies, and meta-analysis of clinical trials of vitamin D supplementation for prevention of ARI has demonstrated protective effects. Several cellular studies have investigated the effects of vitamin D metabolites on immune res...
متن کاملEffects of Vitamin A in Neonates and Young Infants
Vitamin A is the generic name given to a group of fat-soluble compounds including retinol (the alcohol form), retinyl esters, retinaldehyde and retinol acid. Deficiency, first recognized in 1912, can damage the epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract. It can also affect immunocompetence, the reproductive function, growth and vision. The dose of vitamin A for neonates is 5,000 IU given int...

Comment The increased bacterial adherence to epithelial cells found in children with vitamin A deficiency provides evidence for an additional factor that can contribute to the increased risk of infection in this disease. Nutritional deficiencies impair several host defence mechanisms, but much of the work done in the past 20 years focused on immune responses rather than physical barriers. ' Thi...
متن کاملEffects of Vitamin B12 in Neonates and Young Infants
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential coenzyme for nucleic acid synthesis. Animal protein is the major dietary source of vitamin B12. Deficiency of vitamin B12 leads to megaloblastic anemia, degeneration of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and abnormalities of epithelial tissues. Two factors are necessary for the cure of megaloblastic anemia: one in food (extrinsic factor) and one i...
متن کاملCryptosporidial Infection of Lower Respiratory Tract in a Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulates)
Cryptosporial and bacterial co-infection is reported in a budgerigar with clinical manifestations of septicemia and respiratory tract infection. Microscopically large number of round to oval 2-5μm cryptosporidial organisms were found to be lodged on the parabronchial epithelial cells of the respiratory tract. The bacterial colonies were seen around the parabronchial spaces of the lung tissue. I...
